Lake Ohrid, Macedonia

After Peja, I headed to Macedonia’s Lake Ohrid. The road (a little detour) took me winding through Mavrovo NP. Wow, this place is SO beautiful, amazing scenery, lakes, rivers, mountains, villages, monasteries truly spectacular. It took me a long time to drive through as I was stopping to take in the beauty whenever the road allowed. Little villages dot the mountainsides high high up. So high it looks weird (iPhones can’t get good distance shots…). Some of the villages you wonder why up there??? The people that live there are either in hiding or really hate strangers!!!

When I eventually got to Lake Ohrid I had to say goodbye to Jessie (my car) she was being collected in Ohrid. I was sad to see her go. I’m really sorry I didn’t arrange a circular trip, I am loving driving around, suits my inquisitive nature (ok I’m nosey…).

Lake Ohrid has become one of my favourite places. The lake is huge, surrounded by mountains, Macedonia owns 2/3, Albanian 1/3. The water is crystal clear and clean enough to drink (I’ll try it next time).

The more I saw and experienced around the lake – boat trips, churches, castles,

tiny cute streets, little beaches, stunning scenery, cool restaurants and bars the more I wanted.

Ohrid is more geared for tourists than others I had been to in this area and I believe is full July-August. That said, it really is a lovely town with lots to do and so close to some incredible scenery like the Mavrovo NP. I’m VERY sorry I didn’t stay longer, I really loved it. but had booked a lift to Albanian, and didn’t want to let the driver down.
