Senegal – Country 38

I do love Senegal, this is my 3rd visit and I enjoy it more each time. The road from the Gambian border was one of the worst roads we had been on in a long time, big potholes, lots of flooding (which my car “Princess” loves, so I never miss a chance to go through a puddle and keep her happy…). Then about 50km outside Dakar, the roads became some of the best in Sub-Saharan Africa!

Dakar is quite a cosmopolitan city, with lots of restaurants and nightlife (had to dress up a few nights, well, as ‘up’ as you can get after being on the road 10 months and living out of a bag!). On one of our first nights in Dakar, we went out to a hotel for sundowners and some sushi (we hadn’t had any in months…). Now, somebody had other plans for us, we were all evacuated due to a bomb scare (they didn’t find one but the town was on high alert for a few days) so no Sushi!!

We made a trip out to the beautiful, colourful Goree island ( I love this place). Marvelled at the enormous Renaissance statue (it’s insanely big).

Visited a street kid programme for trafficked boys – very sad but they are doing such a good job educating the kids and teaching them life skills and crafts.

It was nice not to be driving far for a while and take our time to see the sights, visits the markets (bought some paintings), go bowling a couple of times. We did take a short drive out to Lac Rose, a lake that is pink(!), the high salt count and the right light give it this colour.

We hosted our last DHL customer function, kids Tag Rugby and eye clinic – really weird after doing one almost every week since last October it was a bit of a shock to the system to realise this incredible journey is drawing to a close (not sure how I feel about that!!).

We ended up staying for two weeks in Dakar as we waited on the boy’s Moroccan visas to be issued, they never were!!!
